The Digest

The cost of alcohol 🪙

Here's a secret: scoring a liquor license is a high-stakes game. The sneaker community has NOTHING on this warzone 🤣

If you want to sell liquor in Indiana, there's less than a 1% chance to get a license at their actual cost. Limited licenses command eye-watering sums. Sometimes hundreds of thousands. It’s so bad that the application page offers to help get you open market info.

Why it matters: Fishers removed that license cap for The Crossing at Fishers District area last Monday. This is where the new event center and Indy Fuel stadium will be. The benefits are twofold:

  • Future business owners without huge amounts of capital have a real chance to get a license in this area

  • Fishers will make more $ on their 1% food and beverage tax

It’s a fitting move. Leaning into the smart, vibrant, and entrepreneurial city vibes.

$33 million glow up 🌟

One big thing: Conner Prairie is using $33 million to revamp the Museum Experience Center.

This isn't a facelift. Plans show six immersive areas, more hands-on learning, and a way to display a bigger chunk of their 27,000 artifacts. Experiences at the current center will close on November 27th. The building will completely close in Feb 2024 and won’t reopen until 2025

National champs 🎮️

HSE is smashing all the buttons in the eSports. They’re taking home national titles! Tuesday’s school board recognized the eSports team for a job well done. Congratulations to the two-year-old team for taking home titles in such a short time 🎉 And don’t hate, certain video games are Olympic sports 😉

In related news. Was your credit card unknowingly charged so you (or your kid) could play a game as a virtual banana? A settlement between the FTC and Fortnite for deceptive billing has been reached. You can file a claim here until Jan 2024. Some possible qualifications:

  • Your kid bought something in Fortnite on your credit card without your knowledge between January 2017 and November 2018.

  • You were wrongfully charged by Fortnite or your account was locked after you told your credit card company that you were wrongfully charged by Fortnite between January 2017 and September 2022.

Quick hits

Weekly recap. Here’s what readers loved the most this week:

National roundabout week. So apparently this is a thing. Today is the last day of the week-long festival in Carmel. If you plan on going to Carmel this weekend… I guess bring your roundabout shirt 👕

Demoted. Since 2016, S&P has given Fishers the highest award possible for debt use in a city. Fishers high fixed costs and growing debt burden ended its streak this year. Bond use is higher than ever to fund things like the new Indy Fuel arena.

Local Business

Legendary gas station. Unfortunately, this isn’t about our beaver friend at Buccees (if someone from the city is reading this, please make this happen). It IS about the equally legendary Philly-based gas station. Wawa. They announced their second location in Westfield. This is a part of their Indiana expansion. The first location to be up will be in Noblesville.
