The Digest

US Foods employees on strike

Fishers has a US Foods distribution center. It’s a huge building on 126th Street that’s easy to miss if you aren’t looking for it. Employees from Fishers US Foods and Chicago have been protesting the past few days. In their demands letter, they outline the usual strike-worthy causes. Poor wages, cutting healthcare, and poor safety.

Why it matters: US Foods supplies food to local school systems, daycares, and more. Truckers refusing to do deliveries means typical shipments may not arrive on time, if they do at all. This will obviously put these businesses in a bind until the contract negotiations are sorted.

Sports bettors rejoice 🎰

✋Who remembers the days you would go to any major sporting event and have little to zero cell service? Fishers is paying ~200k/year for the next 10 years to make sure that doesn’t happen at the new event center. The Public Board of Works and Safety signed this at their most recent meeting. The main purpose for these meetings is for the mayor’s office to approve any contract over $50k.

Now we need DraftKings or FanDuel to add minor league hockey and indoor football to their eligible sports for the sweet in-person betting.

Quick HSE schools updates

January’s HSE School board update was a big one. Here’s a highlight reel of what you need to know:

New board member roles voted on:

  • President: Juanita Albright

  • Vice President: Ben Orr

  • Board Secretary: Suzanne Thomas

Other highlights:

  • Meetings are now at 6 pm every month

  • A grant is being used to create a daycare for HSES employees

  • 5 superintendent candidates have made it through the first round. The board hopes to offer a contract later this month. As a reminder, the school’s previous superintendent left in the middle of her term.

Our friend LarryinFishers covers these topics well if you want to go deeper.

Hot, juicy, lobster 🦞*

Yep. I’m talking about the Lobster Escargot from HC Tavern. It’s no secret that the lobster wars are heating up in Fishers. But one of them stands above the rest.

Each lobster claw is dunked in garlic butter, havarti cheese and served with crispy Tuscan bread. It’s the real deal. In fact, we’ll go on the record and say it’s the best appetizer in Indiana.

If you haven’t tried it, you need to. It’s easy to make a reservation, click here and choose a time that works for you.

Rapid Fire Hits

Quick headlines and things to know from all around 🌐

The original operator of the Colts scoreboard is retiring. Since 1984 (the year the Colts moved to Indianapolis), he has been the only person to operate it. He did not miss a single game in 40 years. That is some true dedication to the team. (link)

Quote: “I proudly will say it. I'll put it on a coffee mug. I'm all for local government until it's stupid, and that is stupid”. - Senator Aaron Freeman on Indy’s “no-turn-on-red” policy last April. A few days ago, he did good on his word and did in fact introduce a bill to revert this policy. (link)

Reason 1001 on why you should not use a gas station car wash: they may randomly combust. On Wednesday, the attached carwash at 96th Street’s Circle K caught on fire. Fishers Fire and PD are still investigating what happened. (link)
