Good Friday morning. This is Fishers Digest. Labor Day weekend is almost here, but first, a quick Fishers news fix before you unplug.

In today’s digest:

  • A trash update

  • Health and Wealth = Hamilton County

  • A pro tip that you must keep between us

— Written by Lindsey Watson and Skyler Braun

There will be no newsletter next Tuesday!! We’ll try and make this one extra good one for ya 👍️

This issue is 1,304 words, a 4-minute read.

The Digest

You can now read the city-managed trash contract 📜

You can now officially read all 50 pages of the contract with Republic Services for city-managed trash. Here’s some interesting things in it that aren’t getting as much attention:

  • Special needs service: Residents with physical limitations can request door-to-door collection at no extra charge

  • Bulk waste pickup: Available on-call with 48 hours notice, limited to one item per month (may incur additional fees)

  • New containers: Each home gets one free 96-gallon wheeled container for trash (64-gallon available on request) and one for recycling. A second trash container is free upon request

  • Schedule change: Weekly trash/yard waste pickup and biweekly recycling, all on the same day

The contract can also be canceled at year 7/10 if they don’t perform. Voting will happen at the September 9th City Council meeting!

HamCo has Health n’ Wealth 🤝

Legend has it that a person’s zip code can predict more about their health than their genetic code. At least, that’s what US News tells us.

Hamilton County ranks as the #5 healthiest county in the country. There’s a few metrics that go into this rating (which you can view here). HamCo’s strongest score is the economy at 93, and lowest is the environment at 49 out of 100.

Why this week felt really hot: Corn Sweat 🌽

Yes, this is a real thing. Corn made it feel hotter this week 😂

Some smart folks at Purdue explain that when crops are over 86 degrees, they use their water to “sweat” and cool themselves off. That makes its way to the atmosphere and we get even hotter, muggier weather. You can read more about how it works here.

>The 12th Annual Fishers Blues Fest is this Saturday and Sunday! This is a free, BYOC (alcohol available for purchase) event. Lineup here.

BUTTER 🧈

First of all, this is an awesome name for an event. Second, this is the 4th annual fine art fair showcasing over 50 Black visual artists in the local Indy community.

Today is the first day, and it continues on till Sunday. Tickets start at $40 here.

Open Season 🍎 🍏

Starting at 9 am today, it’s officially apple pickin’ season. Tuttle’s Orchard has a list of when different apples will be available if you’re looking to pick a specific type:

  • Gala – typically the very end of August

  • Cortland – typically second week of Sep-late September

  • Jonathan – typically second or third week of Sep through early October

  • Golden Delicious – typically last week of September to mid October.

Sunflower selfies 🌻

The 2024 Sunflower Festival at Stuckey Farm (~30 min drive from Fishers) is today through Sept. 2 with a second bloom on Sept. 7-8.

Tickets can be bought at the gate, but you’ll save a couple bucks by purchasing ahead of time here.

Enjoy a wagon ride to the scenic 7-acres of sunflowers (includes one free stem), a vendor market, a corn maze, and more. And don’t forget the apple cider donuts.

Pajama party at IKEA

On Saturday, it will be acceptable to wear your pajamas out. In fact, it’s encouraged and will even score you a free breakfast at IKEA during their Storytime Event.

Visit the Fishers location from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. for a bedtime story, a sleep essentials scavenger hunt and craft, and even a photoshoot with the Fabler Bjorn Bear mascot. Here is all the details.

Puppies and Ponies

We’ve shared this event-hack with you before — polo matches at Hickory Hall. They’re an awesome time for the whole family. Tailgating, polo match, candy airdropped from planes, the works.

On September 27th, they’re partnering with the Indiana Canine Assistance Network to bring you one more animal to enjoy. Puppies!

Admission is $40 per vehicle so bring as many people as possible in one car! More details here.

🎶 Live Music

Your weekend pick:

The obvious pick is going to Blues Fest at the NPD Amp this weekend. It’s free and always a good time!

The less obvious one is the Brat Summer Party at the Vogue tonight. Choose this if you want to dance to club classics. Tickets are $20.

Local Business

Pro tip - cool way to use the Fishers Food Dashboard

What I’m about to share with you is a tool you must wield with great responsibility! The Fishers Restaurant Dashboard shows all the places in Fishers, including food trucks, and their health grades. Since every restaurant is required to submit for paperwork we can use the tool to find out fun info. Like the following:

On the dashboard, if you select “not graded”, select “permanent food establishments”, then zoom out to see all of the Fishers area. You will get a listing of some new places coming to Fishers.

This was how we figured out Kura the Revolving Sushi Bar was coming to Fishers (and shared it here) before it was officially announced 😂 So of note from that list here’s some new places coming:

  • Kura Revolving Sushi Bar

  • Chicken n’ Pickle

  • Max & Tilly’s Chip Shop

Dude, where’s my food truck?! 😥

This local business needs help — some jerks stole their food truck 🤬 They believe the thieves took off with it and headed towards Greenwood.

It’s been a few days now so the likelihood it’s anywhere close to Fishers is low, but if you might know what happened to it you can contact Bae latin at (317) 219-6205 or Carmel Police at (317) 571-2580

2024 Mayor’s Breakfast

The well decorated tables

The 2024 Mayor’s Breakfast is a wrap! In case you didn’t know, the Youth Mentoring Initiative is a local program that connects people like you (a mentor) to students in the HSE school system. It’s impacted over 250 students to date. They made an ask during the breakfast that I’d love to share here:

> They need male mentors!!

There are currently over 70 students waiting to be matched with a mentor, and the commitment is relatively low. Just 30 minutes a week during the school year.

If you’re interested in giving it a shot or just want to learn more, here is their mentorship application page.

New townhouses will be built on the Nickel Plate Trail, just south of 116th street (IndyStar)

A former HSE track champ is headed to the Paralympics in Tokyo! Noah Malone (now at IU) is ranked in the top three athletes in the world in three different events + he already broke the fastest time by a T-12 visually impaired athlete in American history. (WISH-TV)

Here are four incredible achievements posted by HSE Schools so far this year 💪 (X/Twitter)
