Good Friday morning. This is Fishers Digest. The local newsletter that celebrates 2 am twice this Sunday. Enjoy Daylight Savings Time.

☀️ Today's weather: Sunny and a little breezy, with a high near 57°.

In today’s digest:

  • Teacher salaries booming

  • Trash is still the talk

  • Weekend preview

This issue is 1,192 words, a 4-minute read.

The Digest

Teacher salaries 📈

Teacher salaries are close to being finalized for 2023-2024. Here’s what you need to know: The starting salary increased by ~$4.4k. All other salaries increased by similar amounts depending on experience.

  • New teacher starting salary = $48,500

  • Degree + 19 years experience = $91,810

You can navigate to the full contract through the Board docs website here. (Sorry, they refuse to work with our email links)

Talking trash

Nothing could have prepared me for the response to Tuesday's poll on trash. Almost 200 responses of incredibly diverse and thoughtful comments. Here’s what’s next:

  • If haven’t already, you can check out the issue and poll here. Live results are on so you can see how people are voting.

  • I am working to meet with the city (hopefully the Mayor, let me know if you have connections 🙏) to share the results.

  • The next city council meeting is November 20th. I plan to share the results. I’ll include the most common yes/no arguments.

If you want to share the poll with friends, fam, or people who you think should know about this. Make sure you grab your referral code below. You’ll get a birthday shout-out and new merch.

Cold Spring

Depending on how you look at things, Fall/Winter are just prep seasons for Spring and Summer 🤷

One such activity is the Seed Library. With only your library card, you can check out up to 20 “packs” of seeds. They can include vegetables, flowers, you name it. If there’s something you want to see next year, fill out this survey hosted by the library.

Another is the community garden at Cyntheanne Park. Sign-ups for these open on January 1st. These spots go insanely fast. So mark it on your calendar now if you think you might be interested.

Local Business

Fishers Event Center

Fishers believes the event center will open in November of 2024. If you want, you can see the detailed project plan, costs, and hundreds of other pages of information on the build here. It’s an interesting look into the scale of this type of project.

Nothing in this section is sponsored. It’s just things you should know.

The Happenings

Pumpkin guide 🎃

Pumpkins are definitely still in season for at least a couple more weeks. Don’t let your neighbor with Christmas lights up make you think otherwise. But if they start to get a little soggy, here’s a few options on what to do with them:

Go medieval on them by launching them from a trebuchet. Happens throughout the day on Saturday. Free, but registration required. Donations are requested to the Fishers Fire Dept.

Donate your pumpkins to Oinking Acres. They are a non-profit animal sanctuary based out of Brownsburg. Pumpkins are one of their favorite foods!!

  • Since 2017 they have successfully rescued over 500 abandoned, neglected, and unwanted pot-bellied pigs. If you end up falling in love with them, you can adopt one.

Chop it up and mix it with your leaves to create your own compost. Here’s a guide from the Department of Energy.

To celebrate the Christkindlmarket coming to Carmel on November 19th. You can find market-themed cocktails at restaurants around Carter Green in Carmel. Here’s the full list.

🎄 The Merry Prairie Holiday still has quite a few good dates and times available for December. There will be Santa, shows, and a socks-only skating rink. Don’t wait because these will likely sell out. Tickets here.

Dog Tag Dash

Support the Humane Society in Saturday's 2nd annual Dog Tag DASH 5K and Dog Walk. Choose your military branch to rep in a fun competition. And enjoy post-race snacks + a free drink at Grand Junction Brewing Co. Your furry friend will get a bandana too! Sign up here.
