The Digest

Help Carson’s Pickleball Study 🏓

Meet Carson. An intern and budding researcher at SMARI, a local Fishers-based research firm. He’s completing free research this summer and asked if the Fishers Digest community could help. Pickleball is booming — but how booming is it in Hamilton County?!

If you can spare 3 minutes, your input will power a student’s internship and fuel data for Fishers-based businesses that bring cool things to our community.

  • Where’s the spread? Cumberland Road Elementary

  • When’s chow time? June 2 – 27, Monday–Friday, 11:30 AM–1 PM (closed June 19)

Local Business

Business Spotlight: Geist Nursery 🪴

A few of the things you’ll find available at their garden shop

Speaking from experience, this place is worth a visit. Tucked just off the 96th Street path, Geist Nursery is the kind of family-run spot where “hidden gem” feels like an understatement. The 5-acre boutique yard bursts with high-quality annuals, veggie starts, trees, shrubs, and all the soil, mulch, and garden bling you didn’t know you needed until you saw it.

And even better? Native Plants Unlimited lives inside the nursery, stocking Indiana-grown perennials, grasses, and trees. A buffet for pollinators and a cheat code for the “plant natives” resolution you promised yourself you’d try this year. Give Geist Nursery a shot if you’ve never been!

Carmel’s new DORA lets you roam Midtown with a drink in hand 🍻

Carmel Midtown’s newest party trick is just getting warmed up. A new Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) officially flipped the switch last Friday, and the aluminum-cup parade is now a permanent feature from Main Street down to Carmel Drive and across the Monon.

Snag a drink from any of the 13 launch-day spots (Hanami, Savor, 101 Craft Kitchen, Penn & Beech, + .more), pop it in the city-issued silver cup, and roam. Hours are:

  • Mon-Thu 5-10 p.m.

  • Fri-Sat 11 a.m.–11 p.m.

  • Sun 11 a.m.–9 p.m.

Future Forest Alert 🌳

Remember when your science teacher said the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago? Central Indiana Land Trust just did you one better. They planted 16,000 of ’em. Right now, the Nonie Werbe Krauss Nature Preserve in Fishers looks like ankle-high sprouts and wishful thinking, but give it a couple of decades and that sleepy 35-acre field will be rocking oak, hickory, and black walnut like it’s 1850 all over again.

Read more about their fight against fast-growing invaders (looking at you, Callery pear).

💡 Pro tip: Nonie Werbe is a part of the Central Indiana Land Trust. It is not a “Fishers park”. This list has all the properties they manage and how to visit them.

For Fishers parks, this handy visual aid highlights the 20+ parks Fishers offers and manages.
