The Digest

Crunching HSE Schools' 2025 Budget 💸📚

At the latest board meeting, HSE Schools new CFO, Tim Brown, presented a proposed budget of $326 million for 2025. Here are the key highlights:

  • 📈 Budget is $26 million more than last year

  • 📉 Enrollment is down, especially in younger grades which impacts state funding

  • Property tax rate to remain at $1.1433

  • Talk of opening a charter school focused on work-readiness, which if it does happen would open in 2026

  • A budget study committee is proposed to address future financial planning

What does this mean for you? Just the knowledge that there is work to be done to rein in costs, while also increasing enrollment and taking care of teachers.

You can check out the full presentation here. The next board meeting is October 9 at 6 pm, with streaming available.

🏅County Government Experience Awards

Hamilton County's tech team is putting us on the map - literally! Their Parks Finder program just snagged 5th place in a national award for government digital experiences.

This nifty tool lets you find all the local parks and their amenities in one spot. Playground? ✅ Tennis courts? You got it. It's a team effort between the county and local cities to make it easier to become an outdoor enthusiast.

The State of Indiana was also a finalist for having a tech-forward government website. Like using AI in their help chatbot. You can see all the awards and finalists here.

Calling all artists! 🎨

Fishers is always on the lookout for creative talent to showcase at various events throughout the year. Whether you’re a painter, sculptor, musician, or craftsperson, there are opportunities for you to get involved.

Right now, applications are open for the upcoming winter market at Sun King Brewery, running every weekend in December. If you create handmade, unique, and giftable items, this is your chance to shine. You have one more week to apply to be a part of it.

There are two mazes — a long version for more experienced maze-goers (note: could take you an hour), and a short version for littler ones (around 30 minutes). You can visit Tuesday-Sunday from 10 am - 5 pm. And check out the complete maze, all 13.6 acres (!!), from a bird’s eye view here.

Local Business

A big investment in Fishers sports teams 💵

On Tuesday, the City of Fishers gave the green light for a $625,000 investment in two of the new sports teams coming to the event center. Here is how it will be spent:

  • $500,000 in football equipment for the Freight

  • $125,000 in volleyball gear for the Ignite

The city is partnering with ASM Global to manage the new Event Center. ASM will pick up the tab for the equipment, and Fishers will pay them back.

Roasting Fishers 🎤

Axios, a local media company, had the hilarious idea of asking AI (ChatGPT) to roast Indianapolis. It was pretty good, so I wanted to see if it had the knowledge to roast Fishers. It did, and did not hold back 😂

“Fishers: where your biggest decision is whether to hit up the new brunch spot or take another trip to IKEA. The only thing that gets more traffic than the Nickel Plate Trail are the SUVs lined up at Starbucks.”

“Living in Fishers is like the adult version of playing The Sims—you move into a perfectly planned community, customize your cookie-cutter house, and then spend the rest of your life pretending you enjoy paying HOA fees.”

You’ve gone too far, ChatGPT. Everyone knows people in Fishers go to local coffee shops.
