The Digest

Sun explosions imminent

Quick! While you are thinking about it, set a reminder on your phone to this date and time: April 8th, 2024 ~1:45 pm.

That is the when the 2024 total solar eclipse starts here in Indiana. This is the last solar eclipse you will see in the United States for the next 20 years. So yeah, don’t miss it. Luckily, Fishers is directly in the path to see a total eclipse. Scientists are also saying there is a very good chance will get to see explosions happening on the Sun while it happens.

Here’s a fun interactive map that lets you simulate what the big day will be like.

Indianapolis is the #4 hottest housing market in the US 😴

January is yearly predications month for many businesses. Zillow dropped theirs, predicting the hottest markets of 2024. Indianapolis made #4. The list is made by combining home to job ratios, steady home values, and construction activity.

I often joke with friends that Indianapolis is a still a slept-on city. It’s “young”, has a growing tech scene, relatively affordable, great to travel from, I could go on. In the same way that many people are flocking to cities like Austin, Nashville, and coastal areas — I think Indy will see much of the same in coming years.

Do you think Indianapolis (and surrounding areas like Fishers) are slept on?

Arts and Culture Votes

Voting for the 2024 Arts and Culture grants happens tonight. The commission will review all the applications and choose what should move on. You can view the list of applications here! It shows who submitted, and what their idea is. And yes, you will see my application too 😉

If you want to attend, happens at 10 Municipal Drive (The Pavilion Conference Center, in the middle of the circle) at 6 pm.

Food Drive

Kids love trucks and heavy machinery, right? Well next Monday for MLK day, help fill up snowplows with food donations for local pantries. The trucks will be at every Kroger, Billericay Park, and Holland Park.

You’ll also find food drive donation bins all this week at the HEPL library, YMCA, and the city services building (3 Municipal drive). There’s also an Amazon wish list here.

The Happenings

🎄 Christmas Tree = Mulch. The 12 nights of Christmas are past, so it’s time to move on from your Christmas Tree. If you want an easy way to deal with it, you can take it to Brooks School, Cumberland, or Billericay Park. The city will be mulching all the trees, which you can then sign up to help spread at Billericay Park. (link)

🃏 Indiana is in the “Euchre belt”. Every now and then, an event or tournament will pop up locally to play. Here is one of them happening this Thursday at Chicago’s Pizza. And if you don’t know how to play, I bet you can ask your grandparents to teach you. I’m sure they’d love it. If that’s not an option, watch this 10-minute guide.

🤫Secretly, a comedy show is happening this weekend. Rumors say it’s happening in Fishers. No one knows who the set list will be, and no one knows where it will be… yet. But you can buy tickets.

Civil meetings

Board of Public Works meets today at city court chambers at 9 am. Unfortunately, no agenda has been posted. For the daring, these meetings are where the sometimes strange but important decisions happen. For example, the 5g tower approvals.

Armed Services Commission meets today at the Fishers Pavilion Conference Center (10 Municipal Drive) at 4 pm. This is a great meeting to attend if you’re a veteran and want to get involved in the community. Agenda here.

Luke might save you 41 coffees*

You’ve made your 2024 New Year’s resolutions. One of them is to stop eating out as much. Another is to stop going to Starbucks and make coffee at home. Those are great, and I wish you luck. But what about your insurance? What if you were saving $250/year, had better coverage, and did zero work. In Starbucks coffee terms, that’s ~41 coffees a year.

So how does that work? Luke Cathcart is an independent insurance agent who works for you, not the companies. All you have to do is call him, and he will do a complete review of your policies. For free! No strings attached.

You can reach him at 317-225-6105 or email him by clicking here.

Rapid Fire Hits

Quick headlines and things to know from all around 🌐

A new place to play pickleball is coming to Carmel. The DinkHouse is looking to be a private membership club. There will be 8 courts, a players lounge, and a wine/beer bar. They are being pretty transparent about their build and pricing on their website here. It should open by March.

The weirdest story of 2024 is in. Last week we mentioned the Mansion Society Coffee shop and their possibly haunted shop. It turns out there was an even crazier story there. A wedding party of 30 people randomly showed up on New Year’s Eve. They did not book the space, blocked real customers, had a full-blown wedding, then left without paying. Bruh. You should definitely check out their Instagram POV.

The Fishers Century Club is sort of what it sounds like. A group of men get together every quarter, all donate $100 each, then vote on a charity to receive the money. The Youth Mentoring Insitute was December’s winner. You view the past winners and amount donated at this link.

Construction This Week

Here’s a high-level of what you need to know this week.

  • 📈 The Sunblest neighborhood is getting upgrades this week. Any sidewalk that poses a toe or tripping hazard will be replaced.

  • 141st/SR 37 is still on track to start taking bids in Spring of 2024.

Read the full report here.

Thanks!
