The Digest

Class 4a champs

Final score: Fishers 65-56 Ben Davis

For the first time in school history, the Fishers Boys' Basketball team are your 2024 State Champions. Here’s a 30-minute behind-the-scenes documentary of their season leading up to last Saturday’s Championship. Congratulations, Tigers!

Morel Hunting

2024 user reported sightings

It’s mushroom hunting season! Morel’s love to start popping up when ground temps stay around 50°, which should be soon. Sightings are already being reported so strap in and get ready.

There are four types of Morels that can grow in Indiana: black, half-free, white, and tulip. Blacks are what you’re looking for if you go this weekend. Hunters won’t usually share their spots, but here are some general recommendations to find them:

Start by looking around dead elm trees. South-facing hills and areas where water could stand for at least a day are also good. Fort Ben, Brown County, and Morgan-Monroe State Park are your best bets. Just make sure you respect any signage of preserved land or private property.

Use The Morel Sightings app to see where they are being reported and figure out a game plan that works for you. Good luck 🍄

Flower stand 💐

Today is the first day of the year for the honor flower stand at Double Dog Farm and Floral. Every Friday until mid-May, you’ll find beautiful hand-made bouquets on a stand for your purchase. As the name implies, it’s the honor system and they accept cash, venmo, or paypal. You’ll find the stand at 9505 Sargent Road, Indianapolis, IN from 9 am to dusk.

❌ 🌳 Hamilton County Invasives

Invasive species are non-native species that harm our environment, health, and economy. But green is good, right? Not always. The first greening bushes in many woods are the honeysuckle. And the white-blooming trees everywhere are likely Callery Pear. Yes, these are the trees that smell.

These non-native species do not support our native insects and caterpillars. Fewer insects mean less food for baby birds, so fewer birds and butterflies. While an airport might be happy about that, our environment is not.

Here’s a few more fun facts for you:

  • 83% of invasive plants in green spaces come from our home landscapes

  • 42% of threatened or endangered species are at risk because of invasives

  • Economic damages from invasive species in the US are over $138 billion annually.

So what can you do? A few things.

  1. Check for invasive species on your property and remove them.

  2. Volunteer for a weed wrangle. The next one is the Cheeney Creek Weed Wrangle, which you can sign up for at Volunteer Fishers.

If you have a large property, HIP can also come out and give you an assessment. You can contact them at [email protected].
